With the rash of home invasions that are being reported in the news, many people are looking for some type of affordable home security. With people who are working, the home is usually left empty during the day, which presents the opportunity for a break-in. Older people are often alone and easily overcome by home invaders.
For this reason, home security has become the number one priority in the country. There are commercial companies who supply a system, connected to a command center, for a monthly fee, with no installation charge. Some are wired directly to the police and fire department, have video cameras, smoke and carbon monoxide sensors, and other features, depending on the system chosen. These are wireless and prices vary, some as low as $35.00 per month.
For those who do not want to pay a monthly fee, self installation kits can be purchased for hands-on installation. Offerings include things such as using a smartphone or web browser, having battery-powered sensors, or window or door alarms. These kits are quite effective, easy to install, and do not require running electric wires through the walls. Full security systems, for self installation, are also available with various costs.
There are also simple precautions that can be taken. For example, GE has a number of offers. They include a doorstop alarm that sends out an alarm when the door is open, ($10.00). There is also an Automatic Security Light ($25.00) and Window or Door Alarm ($12). The latter attaches to the door, or door jam, and sends out a loud squeal when the door is opened. Other simple devices are also available.
There are advantages and disadvantages to do-it-yourself affordable home security. The advantage is that a great deal of money is saved. The average commercial cost for this kind of protection adds up over time, while a do-it-yourself package has a one-time cost.
The disadvantage is that, with the exception of the full self-installed security system (with motion detectors and additions), most do not have direct contact with the outside world. In addition, some things, such as keypad locks, will require professional installation. Another consideration is that many of the professional systems have the additional benefit of contact if a person falls or is disabled. This is not available on do-it-yourself affordable home security systems.
